Founded in January 2013, Unbounded Robotics is building the next generation of advanced, affordable, mobile manipulation platforms for personal robotics research and service robotics. With decades of robotic hardware and software experience, the team of Willow Garage alumni has developed a mobile manipulation platform that offers state-of-the-art software and a sophisticated hardware exterior.

Founders

Melonee Wise

Melonee Wise

CEO and Co-Founder

Prior to co-founding Unbounded, Melonee was Manager of Robot Development at Willow Garage, leading a team of engineers developing next-generation robot hardware. For more than ten years, she has been developing and designing robot hardware and software. Some of her projects have included developing algorithms, libraries, and hardware for an autonomous boat, car, personal robot platforms, and battle bots. At Willow Garage, Melonee was the co-creator with Tully Foote of the TurtleBot, a low-cost personal robot kit with open-source software. Melonee was also a ROS core team member responsible for maintaining and supporting the core drivers, community tools, and tutorials available in ROS. Melonee holds an MS in Mechanical Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Michael Ferguson

Michael Ferguson

CTO and Co-Founder

Michael was previously a software engineer at Willow Garage where he worked on making robot software more robust and easy to use. His projects included ROS calibration, Ecto PCL, and ROS serial. He has also been a contributor to the Turtlebot project. Prior to joining Willow Garage, he was a researcher with the ILS Institute at the University of Albany, and an instructor for the capstone robotics course. Under his tenure, the course was adapted to ROS, and he led a team to win the 2011 AAAI Manipulation Challenge. Michael also founded Vanadium Labs, a hardware development company, focused on low-cost and easy to use robotics components. Michael holds an MS in Computer Science and a BS in Mathematics from the University of Albany, State University of New York.

Eric Diehr

Eric Diehr

Lead Mechanical Engineer and Co-Founder

Prior to co-founding Unbounded, Eric worked at Willow Garage designing next-generation robotic hardware. Prior to that, he worked at Paper Converting Machine Company where he designed custom high-speed industrial machinery. Eric also has ten years of experience with FIRST robotics, as a student, mentor, and coach. Eric has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University.

Derek King

Derek King

Lead Systems Engineer and Co-Founder

Derek is responsible for most aspects of the UBR-1 electrical hardware and firmware. Derek previously worked at Willow Garage where he wrote much of the firmware for the PR2 robot, as well as the force torque sensor and electrical system of the PR2. Derek has a BS in Computer Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
